My name is Carlo Perri, and I have been the owner and operator of Boston Roofing & Aluminum Inc. since 1994. My journey in this industry began in 1982 working under my father, Salvatore, at S. Perri Aluminum Installation Limited, where I served as manager. In 1990, we launched Boston Roofing and Aluminum Contractors as a division of S. Perri Aluminum.
Since then, the shingle industry has seen significant changes, especially around 1990 when manufacturers mainly produced three types of 3-tab traditional shingles with varying life spans: 10, 15, and 20 years. Shortly thereafter, these were replaced by improved versions offering 20, 25, and 30-year lifespans. Upon closer examination, I discovered that the original shingles were not discontinued but merely rebranded with new packaging. Although assured by sales representatives that this change would not affect shingle performance, issues arose.
By 2002, we received numerous customer inquiries about the performance of shingles installed in 1990. When assisting customers with warranty claims, we were shocked to learn that manufacturers had changed the warranty terms from covering both labor and materials to only materials, without adequate notification.
The situation escalated as manufacturers failed to respond to customer calls, leading to significant dissatisfaction. Despite this, after expressing our concerns to the manufacturer and supplier, assurances were given that our customers’ issues would be addressed.
By 2004, we were introduced to a new line of fiberglass shingles, which offered better performance and were expected to replace organic shingles. Today, leading manufacturers exclusively produce fiberglass shingles.
Recently, we’ve handled numerous warranty claims for organic shingles installed between 1996 and 2002. Although most claims have been honored, some have stalled due to alleged inconsistencies and lack of retrievable information from those years. Understandably, this has led to further customer frustration.
If manufacturers had maintained their original product quality rather than altering packaging, many of these issues could have been avoided. We continue to negotiate with manufacturers and suppliers to ensure our clients receive the service they deserve.
At Boston Roofing & Aluminum Inc., we prioritize honesty and quality over profit. We stand by our commitment to provide top-notch service without endorsing inferior products.
On behalf of our team, I apologize to everyone who was not properly informed about shingle warranties and faced premature roof replacements. We encourage homeowners to thoroughly review warranty information and reach out to us with any questions. This diligence will help you decide if today’s fiberglass shingles are the right choice for your home.
Sincerely,
Carlo Perri
